Deputy Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Maria Oligbi-Edeko (PDP-Esan North East II), has announced her voluntary resignation from her position, citing the minority status of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Assembly as her primary reason.
Gatekeepers News reports that Oligbi-Edeko was elected to serve as Deputy Speaker of the 8th Assembly on June 16, 2023.
In her resignation speech, she emphasised her desire to promote justice, fairness, and equity for all constituencies within the Assembly. She expressed gratitude towards the leaders and members of the PDP for entrusting her with the representation of her constituency.
Following her resignation, fellow lawmakers commended her for her dedication, passion for public service, and integrity during her tenure. Many described her as a committed leader who made significant contributions to the legislative process.
Following her resignation, Osamwonyi Atu (APC-Orhionmwon East) was elected as the new Deputy Speaker through a unanimous vote by assembly members.
Also, Majority Leader Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC-Esan West) proposed a motion to ensure that all entitlements due to the office of the Deputy Speaker be granted to Mrs. Oligbi-Edeko. This motion received support from the minority leader, Charity Airobarueghian (PDP-Ovia North East 1), and was adopted by other lawmakers.
