Oyo State Government has announced that Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Alakia, Ibadan, is set to begin international flight operations by June 2026.
Gatekeepers News reports that Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade made the announcement in a statement on Monday.
Oyelade noted that the international terminal, which is currently 15% completed, is expected to be ready for operation by the target date.
The commissioner added that efforts are underway to upgrade the airport to global standards. The enhancements include extending the runway from 2,400 to 3,000 metres and widening it from 45 to 60 metres to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
He noted that the airfield lighting has been upgraded to CAT C, while firefighting response capabilities have been enhanced to improve safety.
Oyelade said, “Facilities for Customs, Immigration, and other essential agencies are also being put in place.”
Regarding domestic operations, the Commissioner said local flight services at the airport are expected to resume by the end of 2025.
He stated that work on the runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads is about 55% complete, with resumption pending regulatory approval.
According to Oyelade, these developments reflect the state government’s commitment to transforming the Ibadan airport into a modern aviation hub.
He said, “By improving our infrastructure, we enhance domestic travel and prepare for international operations.”
