Department of State Services (DSS) witness, codenamed BBB, testified before a federal high court in Abuja on Wednesday that the agency was not involved in the 2021 arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in Kenya.
Gatekeepers News reports that BBB stated that DSS operates strictly within Nigeria’s borders and does not engage in foreign operations, adding that the agency’s role is limited to internal security matters within the country.
“DSS did not kidnap Kanu in Kenya. We are confined to Nigeria. We did not arrest Kanu in Kenya,” BBB said during cross-examination by defence counsel Paul Erokoro.
The witness also clarified that DSS operates under the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and not under the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), emphasising the agency’s neutrality and independence from political influence.
BBB revealed that DSS gathers intelligence from multiple sources, including human intelligence and social media, with operatives trained to access necessary information effectively.
The witness also linked Kanu’s Radio Biafra broadcasts to incitement of violence, notably during the EndSARS protests in 2020, and accused Kanu of expressing readiness to pursue the creation of Biafra by any means, including armed conflict.
The court admitted certified true copies of judgments from three fundamental rights enforcement lawsuits filed by Kanu as evidence.
These judgments were from the Abia State High Court, the Federal High Court in Umuahia, and the High Court of Enugu State. However, controversy arose over a member of Kanu’s legal team, Aloy Ejimakor, publishing what the prosecution deemed “misrepresentations” of court proceedings on social media.
The judge warned Ejimakor to stop such conduct, emphasising the need for professionalism in the case.
The case has been adjourned for further proceedings.
