Lagos government has dismissed a statement circulating on social media about an alleged amendment to the state’s tenancy law.

Gatekeepers News reports that the alleged amendment limited advance rent payments to three months for existing tenants and imposed stricter limits on how landlords can terminate tenancies and increase rents. It also stated penalties of up to ₦100,000 or a three-month jail term for violations.

Barakat Bakare, special adviser to Lagos State Governor on housing, refuted the claim in a statement on Saturday.

Bakare clarified that the publication did not emanate from Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA), noting that the 2015 tenancy law remains in effect.

She said, “However, the bill for a new Tenancy law is under due consideration at the Lagos State House of Assembly and yet to be passed into Law.”

The Governor’s aide further noted that the Ministry of Housing is currently engaging stakeholders in this regard.

The statement added, “The culture of monthly payment and a clear understanding of the process of real estate transactions at all levels are being discussed at these engagements.”

She assured the public that they would be duly informed when a new tenancy law was enacted.
