Residents near Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, are demanding immediate relocation of the military facility following previous attacks by suspected Boko Haram terrorists and recent bomb explosions that threaten lives and properties.
Gatekeepers News reports that the community want the Federal Government, Defence Headquarters, Borno State Government and other relevant stakeholders to act fast to save residents from constant fear of Boko Haram attack on the military facility.
Dr. Zanna Hassan Boguma, Chairman of Bale Galtimari Consultative Forum in Borno State, an umbrella body of residents living close to Giwa Barracks, made this known during a press conference held at Galtimari Primary School, Jere Local Council of Borno State on Sunday.
Dr. Hassan highlighted the plight of residents, noting that the elderly suffer heart attacks and women experience miscarriages, stressing that relocation of the Giwa Barracks will be a great relief for residents.
According to him, ” Today, we raise a matter of pressing concern to the people of Maiduguri and especially to the communities of Galtimari, Fori, and 122, who live in close proximity to Giwa Barracks, a major military facility in Maiduguri. As you all are aware, Giwa Barracks has over time become a repeated target of attacks by Boko Haram insurgents, with significant incidents recorded in 2014, three separate attacks in 2015, and another in 2019, all aimed at freeing detained insurgents.
