UK Govt To Introduce Strict Social Media Limits For Children

UK government is considering introducing strict limits on children’s social media use to protect them from addiction and promote healthy online habits.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the Technology Secretary Peter Kyle revealed that options such as a two-hour daily cap on social media apps and a 10 pm curfew are being explored.

This move is part of the government’s efforts to ensure children can safely navigate the digital world while fostering healthy relationships with technology.

Kyle emphasised the need for a balanced approach, highlighting the importance of protecting children from online harms while also promoting the benefits of social media.

The proposal comes amid growing concerns about the impact of excessive screen time on mental health, with nearly a quarter of children spending over four hours a day on internet-enabled devices. Some parents support stricter limits, with the Smartphone Free Childhood campaign launching a “parent pact” to withhold handsets from children until at least the end of year 9 and keep them off social media until age 16.

The government is researching the issue further and considering new legislation to strengthen online safety measures. The Online Safety Act will require tech companies to protect children online and remove illegal content.
