Nigeria and the Republic of Benin have signed an agreement to deepen bilateral cooperation and set a precedent for broader collaboration across Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Gatekeepers News reports that the agreement was formalised on Saturday during 2025 West Africa Economic Summit (WAES), held at Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
The agreement was signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
Benin was represented by Shadiya Alimatou Assouman, Minister of Industry and Trade, and Shegun Adjadi Bakari, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
The presidency described the move as a bold step toward creating a more unified and resilient West African region.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and, President of Benin, Patrice Talon, who also attended the event, hailed the signing as a turning point in fostering unity and shared prosperity across ECOWAS.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu emphasised the importance of regional cooperation, stating that West African nations must work together strategically to gain stronger relevance in the global economy.
