Many people, including traders and shoppers, lost their lives on Saturday when a tipper truck lost control and crashed into Mile 6 market in Jalingo, Taraba state.
Gatekeepers News reports that Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency publication, revealed that the truck, reportedly loaded with sand, had suffered a tyre burst while travelling at high speed.
Eyewitnesses said the driver was unable to regain control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and plough into the crowded market.
Makama said several people sustained serious injuries while many others are feared
dead.
It added that emergency responders and security personnel arrived shortly after to rescue victims and transport them to nearby hospitals.
The remains of the deceased have also been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to identify victims and notify their families.
The truck driver has been arrested and is currently in custody as investigations continue.
