A federal capital territory (FCT) high court in Maitama has fixed July 17 to rule on an application by former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello seeking permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.
Gatekeepers News reports that during Tuesday’s hearing, Bello’s counsel, Joseph Daudu, told the court that a motion was filed on June 20 requesting the release of his client’s international passport to enable the trip.
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) opposed the request, arguing that it could stall proceedings and amounted to an abuse of court process, noting a similar application was filed at the Federal High Court.
Daudu, however, maintained that the current application is separate from the federal case, as the charges differ. He added that it was necessary to apply in both courts to avoid legal loopholes.
EFCC counsel Chukwudi Enebele insisted that Bello should have notified his sureties of the planned trip, arguing that filing similar motions in two courts risks conflicting rulings.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Maryann Anenih adjourned the matter until July 17 for a ruling.
