Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, challenging the judgment of the Federal High Court that imposed a N5 million fine and ordered her to tender a public apology in two national dailies and on her Facebook page.
Gatekeepers News reports that the fine and apology were imposed after the trial court found Natasha guilty of contempt for allegedly disobeying a court order.
However, Natasha’s lawyers argue that the trial judge erred in law and breached her right to fair hearing.
In the notice of appeal, Natasha’s lawyers, led by Prof Roland Otaru, SAN, and Michael Jonathan Numa, SAN, raised six grounds of appeal, including that the trial judge lacked jurisdiction to entertain the contempt proceedings and that the fine imposed was excessive and punitive.
