The family of late former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his wife Remi, and numerous national and international dignitaries for their support and condolences following Buhari’s death.
Gatekeepers News reports that Buhari died at the age of 82, on July 13, 2025, in a London clinic after battling a prolonged illness.
In a statement issued on behalf of the family by Mamman Daura, Buhari’s nephew, and signed by former presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu, the family described the overwhelming expressions of sympathy as deeply touching and comforting during their time of grief.
Daura said, “It is truly comforting to receive such support from the President and the Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, who went to the United Kingdom and later came to Daura, where he and the ministers spent several days during the mourning period.”
“These have instilled confidence in all of us to face this loss with courage.”
He commended Tinubu for declaring a public holiday in Buhari’s honour and renaming University of Maiduguri after him, describing them as thoughtful gestures.
Daura also acknowledged the condolences from international leaders, including King Charles III of England, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, the African Union chairperson, leaders from ECOWAS countries, and support from former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar
He extended gratitude to Vice-President Shettima and his wife, along with several state Governors including Dikko Radda of Katsina and Babagana Zulum of Borno, as well as Governors from Adamawa, Kano, Kwara, Lagos, Kaduna, Imo, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kebbi.
The deceased’s family appreciated Former Vice-Presidents Atiku Abubakar, Namadi Sambo, Yemi Osinbajo, and Babagana Kingibe, along with other former Governors such as Peter Obi for their condolences.
Daura also thanked federal officials such as SGF George Akume and his predecessor Boss Mustapha, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and his predecessor Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, along with both current and former cabinet members.
The family expressed appreciation to traditional rulers, notably the Sultan of Sokoto, the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of Gwandu, and the Emirs of Katsina and Daura, among others across Nigeria and neighboring countries, who either visited or sent representatives.
He noted the significant turnout of religious, community, and political leaders from across the country, which he described as both overwhelming and reassuring.
Daura further appreciated security agencies, civil servants, community associations, civil society groups, and the media.
He highlighted the visits by business leaders including Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, Muhammadu Indimi, Dahiru Mangal, Kola Adesina, and Nasiru Danu.
The statement concluded, “We also take this opportunity to thank the entire citizens of this country and those of other nations represented by their missions in Nigeria.”
“All of Nigeria came out in force to bury Buhari and condole with us and pray for him. We are deeply grateful for the visits, the condolence messages, and prayers on him. We are thankful to all.”
