Finance Officer, Tax and Payroll

Description:
The job holder will support payroll administration and tax operations, ensuring compliance with industry specific regulations. Collaborates cross-functionally to align tax strategies with the company’s overall goals, analyze data, and implement best practices to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of operations
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Support the tax compliance and payroll administration process and identify opportunities for process
- improvements.
- Ensures tax computations for Withholding Tax, Value Added Tax, PAYE, and Company Income Tax, and
- other applicable taxes.
- Accurately prepare payroll schedules and statutory deductions in line with company policies and
- regulations.
- Ensure timely payroll disbursement and maintain detailed payroll records.
- Support the preparation and submission of payroll-related reports to internal and external stakeholders
- as required.
- Implements enhancements in systems, policies, and procedures related to tax management.
- Evaluates vendor performance and ensures compliance with service level agreements.
- Identifies and mitigates risks associated with tax operations, ensuring corporate tax liabilities are
- minimized within legal frameworks.
- Collaborate with the tax consultants to safeguard Matrix’s interest during tax investigations and queries.
- Ensure comprehensive documentation of tax remittance and documentation support.
- Monitor current and impending changes to tax regulations and make appropriate updates to policies
- and strategies.
- Resolves employee inquiries and escalations related to payroll and tax matters in a timely and professional manner.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Banking and Finance or a related course.
- Minimum of 3-4 years experience as a tax accountant.
- A professional accounting certification, such as ICAN is preferred.
- Experience working with a tax consulting firm is preferred.
- Good understanding of tax laws, regulations pertinent to income tax, VAT, and other applicable taxes.
- Proficiency in working with accounting software and ERP systems will be considered.
- Ability to work efficiently within a team as a good team player.
- High proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office tools.
Description:
The job holder will oversee and manage all aspects of payroll processing and tax compliance across the organization. This role ensures accurate adherence to tax regulations, timely disbursement of salaries, and effective reporting. The job holder also will provide strategic input on tax planning, and compliance initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Strategic Tax Planning and Optimization – develop and implement tax-efficient structures and strategies across all activities in the organization, including exploration and production.
- Oversee the end-to-end payroll processing cycle and ensure timely, accurate salary disbursements in accordance with company policies and legal requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant tax laws and statutory requirements, including PAYE, VAT,
- Withholding Tax, and Company Income Tax.
- Proactively identify tax-related risks in transactions and corporate activities and develop risk mitigation strategies in collaboration with internal stakeholders, ensuring the organization’s compliance and financial protection.
- Lead interactions with the upstream and downstream tax regulatory bodies, manage tax audits and queries.
- Supervise the preparation and filing of statutory returns to regulatory bodies.
- Review payroll schedules and statutory deductions for accuracy and completeness.
- Lead the implementation of process improvements, automation, and system enhancements in payroll and tax operations.
- Coordinate periodic audits of payroll and tax operations and address any findings or discrepancies.
- Provide guidance and training to tax and payroll staff, ensuring knowledge transfer and adherence to best practices.
- Work closely with external tax consultants and regulatory bodies to manage tax audits, investigations and correspondence.
- Monitor changes in tax regulations and proactively update.
- Resolves employee inquiries and escalations related to payroll and tax matters in a timely and professional manner.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Banking and Finance or a related discipline.
- A professional accounting certification, such as ICAN or ACCA, is required.
- A relevant tax certification (e.g., CITN) will be an advantage.
SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in tax and payroll accounting.
- Experience working with the Big 4 accounting firm or a leading Tax Consulting firm is an advantage.
- Expert understanding of tax laws, regulations pertinent to income tax, VAT, and other applicable taxes.
- Proficiency in working with accounting software and ERP systems will be considered.
- Ability to work efficiently within and lead a team.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for managing regulators and cross-functional stakeholders.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional ethics
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/tax ERP system
