Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has disclosed that 18 drivers arrested for driving against the traffic flow will undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluations.
Gatekeepers News reports that the directive, issued by Lagos State Government, is part of a broader strategy to address the persistent issue of one-way traffic violations across the state.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs in a statement, the move aims to restore traffic discipline, ensure public safety, and deter future offenders.
General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the psychiatric evaluation as a necessary step to protect the public from the risks posed by dangerously reckless drivers.
The agency has concluded arrangements for the immediate prosecution of the apprehended motorists, stating that each offender will be subjected to a thorough mental health evaluation to assess their cognitive and behavioural fitness for driving.
Bakare-Oki noted that the initiative reflects global best practices in advanced traffic psychology and behavioural enforcement.
He said, “The deployment of psychiatric testing serves as both a corrective instrument and a deterrent to those who may be tempted to emulate such hazardous behaviour.”
“This measure is more than just a traffic enforcement initiative; it is a moral and civic imperative, reflecting the Lagos state government’s vision to promote responsible motoring, safeguard human life, and maintain order on our roads.”
The GM added that despite continuous awareness campaigns, some motorists persist in violating traffic laws, causing accidents, congestion, and infrastructure damage.
He stressed that Lagos State Government remains committed to strict enforcement of traffic regulations to maintain order and protect road users.
