Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has sworn in the newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that the swearing-in ceremony took place on Sunday at Lagos House, Ikeja, following the local government elections held on July 12, 2025.
During the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the newly inaugurated council officials must focus on delivering effective grassroots governance and development.
He reminded them that with the full financial autonomy now granted to local governments, they bear full accountability for their performance.
Sanwo-Olu said, “They want safer streets, better roads, functional health centres, thriving schools, clean markets, and real opportunities for our youth.”
“Lagos is counting on you to bring real development to every street, every ward, and every community.”
Sanwo-Olu pledged his administration’s support but stressed that the government would demand the highest standards of leadership.
Also speaking at the event, Bolaji Robert, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, congratulated the elected officials.
According to Robert, their electoral victories demonstrated widespread public trust and the transparency of the election process.
He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for upholding democratic principles at the grassroots level and credited the peaceful and credible conduct of the elections to the governor’s leadership.
Robert also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, referring to him as the “father of modern democracy in Nigeria,” and praised his foundational role in shaping democratic institutions in Lagos and across the country.
He formally presented the 57 newly elected council chairmen and vice-chairmen to the Governor for swearing-in, in accordance with the constitution and laws of Lagos State.
