WAFCON: Tinubu To Receive Super Falcons In Abuja Today

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to officially welcome the Super Falcons to Abuja Today, Monday July 28, following their victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Gatekeepers News reports that the Nigerian team pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 to secure their 10th title in the final played on Saturday night.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named Player of the Tournament, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie won Goalkeeper of the Tournament, and head coach Justine Magudu received Coach of the Tournament honours.

Speaking with The Guardian on Sunday, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, who was part of the federal government delegation in Morocco, confirmed that the team would arrive in Nigeria between Sunday and Monday.

He said, “I am in the team’s camp right now trying to put finishing touches on final departure to Abuja today (Sunday) or tomorrow (Monday).”

“Our sports-loving President Bola Tinubu spoke with the players shortly after the victory on Saturday night and promised to give them a red carpet reception on arrival. As I said, that will happen between today (Sunday) and tomorrow (Monday).”

Reflecting on the tension-filled final, which saw Morocco score twice within the first 24 minutes through Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy, Olopade said he never lost faith in the Nigerian side.

He said, “I believed so much in Coach Magudu’s tactics, and I thank God it played out well in the final.”

“When we were two goals down, I told Nigerian dignitaries around me, including the Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, and the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Chief Sunday Dare, not to panic.”

“ My level of optimism in the team increased when I noticed that our captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, had increased her pace, supplying passes from all angles.”
