UK is set to recognise Palestinian statehood in September ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), according to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Gatekeepers News reports that Starmer, however, outlined conditions for this move, stating that it would happen “unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, reaches a ceasefire, makes clear there will be no annexation in the West Bank, and commits to a long-term peace process that delivers a two-state solution.”
Starmer emphasized that there is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas, reiterating the UK’s demands on Hamas, including releasing all hostages, signing up to a ceasefire, accepting no role in governing Gaza, and disarming.
The Prime Minister committed to assessing the progress made by both parties ahead of the UNGA before making a final decision on recognizing Palestinian statehood. According to the statement, this assessment will ensure that no one side will have a veto.
The UK’s position on Palestinian statehood recognition appears to be contingent on Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, with Starmer pushing for a ceasefire and a long-term peace process that delivers a two-state solution.
