President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for Bashir Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
Gatekeepers News reports that this allows him to remain in office beyond the previously set retirement date of August 31, 2025.
The extension was confirmed in a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, the extension is intended to allow Adeniyi to consolidate the administration’s ongoing reforms within the customs sector.
Appointed in an acting capacity in June 2023, Adeniyi was officially confirmed as Comptroller-General in October 2023. Since assuming the role, he has been leading key reforms in the NCS.
Among the major initiatives Adeniyi is expected to continue overseeing are the modernisation of customs operations, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and the execution of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.
The presidency expressed confidence that the extended tenure would further enhance the customs service’s effectiveness in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
