Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has criticised politicians who pledge to serve only one term in office.
Gatekeepers News reports that Soludo referred to such commitments as illogical and suggested that individuals making them may need psychiatric evaluation.
Soludo made the remarks during a political rally held in Anambra South on Saturday, as part of his campaign for re-election.
He stated that any politician making a one-term promise should not be taken seriously, arguing that such statements go against the spirit of the constitution, which permits two terms for Governors.
The Governor said, “Tell us where it has ever happened or who. Anybody who is saying this needs a psychiatric examination because you are taking every one of us to be a fool.”
His comments come in response to recent political declarations, including that of George Moghalu, the Labour Party (LP) candidate in the upcoming Anambra governorship election, who pledged to serve a single term to promote zoning and rotation of power.
Similar promises have been made at the national level by former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, both of whom expressed willingness to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
Soludo dismissed such promises as political gimmicks, asserting that governance should be about competence and constitutional integrity, not symbolic pledges.
He also used the rally to highlight progress made under his administration, insisting that Anambra State has grown past the era of tolerating unqualified candidates.
The Governor said, “Anambra, we have advanced. There is a calibre of people that Anambra has gone higher; we are not going to go back. Anambra has no place for street urchins.”
Soludo further expressed concern over individuals aspiring to lead the state without proper educational credentials, warning that such ambitions could derail the state’s progress.
He added, “ Some of them have no school certificates, but they want to be governor of Anambra.”
The Anambra governorship election is scheduled for November 8, 2025.
