Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has assured residents of Maiduguri that there is no immediate threat from the rising water levels at Alau Dam, following heightened concerns triggered by recent heavy rainfall.
Gatekeepers News reports that the reassurance came during his visit to inspect the ongoing reconstruction efforts at the dam site.
While acknowledging the anxiety among the public, the Governor noted that current evaluations suggest the situation remains under control.
He said measures have been implemented, including the opening of additional water channels, which have contributed to a recent four-inch drop in water levels, with expectations for further decline.
Governor Zulum emphasised the importance of continuous monitoring and proactive flood management, highlighting the contractor’s commitment to the project despite earlier delays due to technical processes.
He also cautioned residents in flood-prone areas against practices that obstruct water flow, such as blocking drainage systems or constructing buildings on waterways. He urged the public to maintain clean drainage and comply with safety regulations.
In a broader effort to prevent future flooding, the Governor revealed plans to revisit the city’s master plan to correct environmental distortions.
He stressed the need to clear all tributaries and waterways feeding into the main canal and enforce stricter environmental standards to safeguard the city’s infrastructure.
