Lagos Govt Urges Calm Amidst Heavy Rainfall And Flash Flooding
Lagos Government has issued a call for calm to all residents in response to the heavy rainfall experienced over the past 12 hours.

Gatekeepers News reports that the state has assured citizens that it has implemented resilient infrastructure to address flash flooding concerns.

On Tuesday, Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, shared a new weather advisory from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which predicted continued heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the next three days.

He acknowledged the possibility of flash flooding in some areas due to the inability of major drainage collectors to manage the significant runoff from the intense rains.

Wahab emphasised that Lagos, as a coastal city, is particularly vulnerable to flash flooding, especially considering the effects of climate change. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid panic during this period. He mentioned that the heavy rains would likely raise lagoon water levels, leading to a tidal lock and hindering drainage from collectors.

Areas adjacent to rivers and lagoons are specifically at risk of flash floods, which may present strong currents. Given that many students are currently on holiday, Wahab advised caution, discouraging children from playing in the rain or swimming in floodwaters.

Additionally, he reiterated warnings to motorists and pedestrians to avoid wading through floods, as vehicles may become submerged and individuals could be swept away. The commissioner cautioned against disposing of refuse in drainage systems during the rain, noting that such actions can lead to blockages and exacerbate flooding issues.

To mitigate flood risks, the state is enhancing year-round cleaning and maintenance of drainage channels and has awarded contracts for the concrete lining of new drainage systems to accommodate rainwater runoff better.

The commissioner added that concerted efforts are essential to managing the effects of the unusual rainfall in Lagos over recent hours.
