President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of a free healthcare programme for low-income retirees under Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
Gatekeepers News reports that according to a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the initiative is a key part of the administration’s plan to strengthen social protection and ensure dignity in retirement.
The directive followed a briefing from Omolola Oloworaran, Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), at the State House, Abuja.
Tinubu also called for the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee, which would provide a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners under the CPS.
The president further ordered PenCom to urgently resolve the long-standing police pension issue, stressing that security officers who dedicate their lives to protecting the nation deserve a peaceful retirement.
During the meeting, Oloworaran outlined measures to protect pension fund assets from inflation and economic pressures, as well as plans to introduce foreign currency contributions to enable Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the scheme.
Tinubu expressed strong support for the reforms, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and safeguarding the future of ordinary Nigerians.
