Crystal Palace Beat Liverpool To Win First-Ever Community Shield Title

Crystal Palace on Sunday, defeated Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to win their first-ever FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.

Gatekeepers News reports that the FA Cup winners held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw in regulation time before triumphing in the shootout, marking their maiden victory in both the competition and against Liverpool at Wembley.

Liverpool featured four new signings in their starting XI, including record signing Florian Wirtz, striker Hugo Ekitike, and defenders Milos Kerkez and Jerome Frimpong. Palace, meanwhile, fielded a familiar lineup from their FA Cup-winning campaign.

The Reds won their first goal after just four minutes when Wirtz set up Ekitike, who slotted home a low shot for 1-0. However, Virgil van Dijk’s foul on Ismael Sarr gifted Palace a penalty, which Jean-Philippe Mateta converted in the 17th minute. Frimpong restored Liverpool’s lead four minutes later with a mishit cross that looped into the net.

In the second half, Ekitike squandered two golden chances before Palace mounted another fightback. Alisson Becker twice denied the London side, but Sarr eventually found the draw in the 77th minute with a neat finish at the near post.

With neither side able to grab a late winner, the match went to penalties. Mohamed Salah missed Liverpool’s opening spot kick, while Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson saved efforts from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, sealing a historic 3-2 shootout win for the Eagles.
