Flood has claimed eight lives and destroyed vast farmlands in Enohia Itim community, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement on Monday, the Council’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sunday Nkama, said the incident, which occurred on Friday, August 1, 2025, followed heavy rainfall that caused severe flooding.

The disaster affected over 800 residents, washing away farmlands particularly a large plantain plantation while leaving several families in grief.

Nkama confirmed that three of the victims’ bodies have been recovered, while five remain missing. Among the dead were three children.

The Councillor representing Itim Ward in Afikpo Legislative Council, Hon. Francis Abani Okpani, reiterated the casualty figures and recovery efforts.

Expressing deep sorrow, the Executive Chairman of Afikpo LGA, Timothy A. U., condoled with the bereaved families and pledged that the local government would partner with relevant state and federal agencies to provide relief and humanitarian aid.

He reminded residents that the Federal Ministry of Environment had earlier listed Afikpo among areas prone to flooding this year and urged them to factor climate change forecasts into their flood risk management.

He also advised communities to maintain functional drainage systems and keep waterways free from blockages to avert future disasters.
