Anambra State Government on Wednesday dismissed eight operatives from the Agunechemba security outfit following their involvement in the assault of a female corps member.
Gatekeepers News reports that the announcement was made by Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, during a press briefing at the agency’s headquarters in Awka.
The decision came after the government received reports regarding the incident, which occurred on Tuesday while the operatives were pursuing suspected cultists.
Emeakayi condemned the attack on the corps member, stating that such behavior falls outside the agency’s mandate and is unacceptable. He emphasised that the Soludo administration will not tolerate unprofessionalism, brutality, or abuse of power among security personnel, warning that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face immediate dismissal and potential prosecution.
Emeakayi noted that the incident could serve as a pivotal moment for reforming the Agunechemba security outfit and for restoring public trust in community security operations. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights in all security engagements.
The distressing incident, which was captured in a viral video showing operatives assaulting the corps member and stripping her naked, has drawn widespread condemnation, including from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
The victim’s lawyer, Cyrus Onu, has called for the prosecution of the involved operatives and for compensation for the corps member.
“We have written petitions to the Anambra government, to the Attorney General of the Federation, and we have been demanding that these persons be prosecuted and they pay compensatory damages. We gave a timeline; it is allowed by the law.
“After that, we’ll take all the necessary steps, both civil and criminal, to ensure that these persons are not just prosecuted but, of course, the security outfit itself and the persons in charge, who will be the executive governor of Anambra State, will be made to pay compensation.
“We are demanding compensatory damages, not just criminal prosecutions for these persons,” Onu told Channels Television on Wednesday.
