Dangote Cement Plc has reiterated its commitment to retraining its truck drivers as part of efforts to improve operational efficiency and ensure safer road use across Nigeria.
Gatekeepers News reports that at the 2025 Annual Drivers’ Retreat, themed Absolute Safer Road Policy, Group Managing Director Arvind Pathak explained that as a company with thousands of trucks in its fleet, road safety remains a top priority.
Pathak noted that the annual retreat is aimed at reinforcing the company’s values and strengthening drivers’ adherence to its Absolute Safer Road Policy.
The training exercise, held at the DCP Ibese Plant in Ilaro, Ogun State, brought together over 900 drivers, with a follow-up retraining session scheduled for Obajana, Kogi State.
According to the management, the initiative focuses on improving safety, ethical conduct, and clear systems and procedures designed to prevent road incidents nationwide.
Dangote Cement also highlighted that every truck driver undergoes a thorough recruitment process, which includes holding a valid Class G licence, background checks on both drivers and guarantors, and comprehensive medical examinations covering vision, blood pressure, body mass index, and random blood sugar levels. Drug and alcohol screening is also mandatory.
Beyond this, prospective drivers complete a two-week intensive programme covering twelve safety modules, practical driving tests, and written examinations.
Over 2,000 drivers have successfully passed through this process in the last two months, with only qualified candidates certified to operate Dangote vehicles.
In addition, drivers are required to undergo routine pre-trip medical assessments conducted by licensed health professionals to ensure they are physically and mentally fit to drive.
Random drug tests are also regularly carried out to enforce the company’s zero-tolerance stance on substance use.
The company further stressed its continuous collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other regulatory bodies to standardise and improve training, compliance, and safety procedures. These agencies also play a role in monitoring and evaluating the company’s safety practices.
Dangote Cement reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening driver training, enforcing strict behavioural standards, applying sanctions against reckless driving, and working with regulators and communities to enhance road safety while maintaining transparency and accountability in its operations.
