National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported that Nigeria’s air transport sector contributed N215.6 billion to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023.

Gatekeepers News reports that NBS noted that Abuja, Lagos, and Rivers states account for more than 70 percent of the output.

According to the bureau’s latest state-level aviation GDP figures, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) topped the list with N69.88 billion (32.4%), followed by Lagos with N62.64 billion (29%), and Rivers with N22.91 billion (10.6%).

Other states in the top 10 were Delta (N10.27 billion), Kano (N7.41 billion), Imo (N6.74 billion), Enugu (N5.72 billion), Edo (N5.17 billion), Akwa Ibom (N4.45 billion), and Borno (N2.66 billion).

Collectively, these states contributed more than 95 percent of the aviation sector’s GDP share last year.

At the bottom of the chart, states such as Benue (N38.54 million), Niger (N15.09 million), Jigawa (N53.76 million), Kebbi (N249.11 million), and Bauchi (N264.37 million) recorded minimal activity.

Meanwhile, Abia, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Kogi, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara had no recorded air transport contribution in 2023.

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) noted in May that the aviation sector now contributes $1.7 billion to Nigeria’s GDP.

According to FAAN Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, domestic air travel in 2023 exceeded 16 million passengers, while international flights carried over 3.5 million passengers.
