NRC Suspends Abuja-Kaduna Train Operations After Derailment Incident

Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna route effective immediately, following a derailment incident that occurred on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

Gatekeepers Newreports that according to NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, the suspension will remain in place until investigations are concluded and safety is assured.

The train derailed shortly after departing Abuja around 11 a.m. en route to Kaduna. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers scrambling to safety. Six passengers sustained minor injuries and have since received medical attention. However, the exact number of passengers on board is yet to be determined.

The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a probe into the incident.

NSIB Director-General Alex Badeh Jr. expressed sympathy for those affected, stating, “We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries.

The Bureau has deployed investigators to the site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation.”

The NRC has initiated refunds for all affected passengers. NSIB has also extended support to passengers impacted by the accident.
