Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that six people sustained injuries in the Abuja-Kaduna train derailment that occurred on Tuesday.
Gatekeepers News reports that the train, which was travelling from Abuja to Kaduna, veered off the track and left several coaches tumbling. The incident took place between Kubwa and Asham stations.
According to Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the train was conveying 618 people, including 583 passengers and 15 crew members.
In a statement, Bimbo Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, disclosed that no lives were lost in the accident.
The statement reads, “NSIB is aware of the derailment involving a Kaduna-bound train service which occurred at approximately 11:09 a.m. today, Aug. 26, 2025, at KM 49 between Kubwa Station and Asham Station.”
“Current information available indicates that six persons sustained injuries, and no recorded fatalities. A go-team has been deployed to the site to gather evidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and commence investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.”
“The bureau investigation into the incident will focus on identifying the direct and underlying factors that led to the derailment, with the aim of issuing safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence.”
NSIB Director-General, Alex Badeh, extended sympathy to those who sustained injuries during the incident.
