Troops of the Nigerian Army have repelled an attack on a military base in Babanna, Borgu LGA of Niger state, killing several bandits in the process.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday when a large group of gunmen, riding motorcycles, stormed the base and opened fire.
Soldiers engaged them in a fierce gun battle, leaving many of the attackers dead. Although most of the bodies were taken away by their comrades, at least one corpse was left behind.
Following the clash, security agencies heightened surveillance in the area to forestall further incursions, placing the community on high alert.
Niger state has witnessed a surge in bandit activities in recent months. In July, at least 45 gunmen were killed during a confrontation with troops in Iburu village, Shiroro LGA.
Earlier in February, armed groups launched separate raids on villages in Shiroro and Munya LGAs, killing one person and abducting several residents.
