A county court in the United States has given a life sentence plus 20 years to its citizen, 37-year-old Nicholas Giroux for killing Nigerian-born boxer, Isaiah Olugbemi.
Gatekeepers News reports that Olugbemi, an accomplished amateur fighter, was discovered in June 2024 lying on Meadowmist Way in Odenton, Maryland, with multiple gunshot wounds.
According to court documents, police reviewed surveillance footage showing a white male confronting Olugbemi with a handgun before shooting him multiple times and fleeing the scene on foot.
Giroux was questioned by police a day later, during which he admitted to the crime. He was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder.
On August 26, Judge Richard Trunnell sentenced him to life plus 20 years for first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a crime of violence.
Anne Colt Leitess, state’s attorney for Anne Arundel County, condemned the act, describing it as a cruel and senseless murder, adding that the punishment was deserved.
She said, “Mr. Olugbemi was a father and rising star in amateur boxing. This was what took the life of someone with great promise.”
“The callousness and lack of remorse on the part of this defendant is really disturbing. He deserves this sentence. And to the family and friends of Mr. Olugbemi, I hope that today provides some sense of justice for this terrible ordeal.”
