Liverpool has signed Newcastle striker Alexander Isak in a British-record £125 million ($169 million) deal after weeks of negotiations that dominated the Premier League transfer window.
Gatekeepers News reports that Swedish forward signed a six-year contract with the Premier League champions after Newcastle finally accepted Liverpool’s improved offer.
Isak told Liverpool’s website, “ I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.”
“I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”
Liverpool had earlier seen a £110 million bid rejected, but Isak pushed for the transfer, even skipping some of Newcastle’s pre-season preparations.
He trained separately at his former club Real Sociedad and was left out of Newcastle’s Asia tour with what was reported as a thigh injury.
Eddie Howe wanted to keep him, but Isak insisted on leaving, accusing Newcastle of breaking a promise that he could move if a top club made a fair offer.
Isak’s signing takes Liverpool’s total spending on new players since last season to about £416 million, breaking Chelsea’s 2023 record.
Alongside him, the Reds have also added Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, and Giovanni Leoni.
