Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has ordered the immediate arrest of security operatives involved in a shooting incident at Emeka Offor Plaza, Onitsha Main Market, which left one person dead and others injured.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred on Tuesday when task force operatives opened fire during an enforcement operation. Victims of the shooting were rushed to the hospital, where one of them, identified as Miss Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed dead on arrival.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said the governor directed that the suspects be handed over to the police for prosecution and that the medical bills of the injured be covered by the state government.
“We appreciate the swift intervention of the Police, who have restored calm and order to the area. An investigation into the incident has commenced, and the government will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” Mefor stated.
He added that the late Miss Igwe’s body has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy and preservation, while other victims are responding positively to treatment.
Mefor noted that normalcy has been restored to the market, with police patrols and monitoring ongoing to ensure peace.
The security operatives involved are believed to be members of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade, a special enforcement unit tasked with implementing environmental and sanitation laws in the state.
