FG Sets Up Committee For Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day Celebration

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to coordinate activities for Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja, said the anniversary would be both a celebration of Nigeria’s journey and a call to action for the future.

“This anniversary is a reminder of where we are coming from and where we are going from here. As a nation, we have faced challenges in areas such as political, economic, and social issues, but we have overcome them,” Akume said.

He urged Nigerians to see the celebration as an opportunity to strengthen unity, patriotism, and commitment to national development.
“An anniversary is not just a celebration of the past. It is a call for action for the future. We must therefore commit ourselves to building a nation where every citizen feels valued and empowered to contribute their quota to the goals and aspirations of the country,” he added.

According to a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the anniversary events will begin with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Other scheduled activities include:
• Friday, Sept 26: Juma’at service and women’s programmes
• Saturday, Sept 27: Youth activities and historical arts exhibition
• Sunday, Sept 28: Church service
• Monday, Sept 29: Public lecture
• Wednesday, Oct 1: Presidential broadcast and Independence Day Parade

As part of the commemoration, Akume also unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project workstation, an initiative by CherryAfrica Magazine in collaboration with the SGF’s office. The project includes a state-of-the-art interview studio where top government officials will share insights on their contributions to national development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The national compendium would serve as a comprehensive repository of information on the nation’s milestones and development trajectory, cutting across the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial eras, with emphasis on MDAs, the economy, the three tiers of government, and other key sectors,” the statement noted.
