Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s 100m hurdles world champion, will headline the country’s 15-member contingent to the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Gatekeepers News reports that the National Sports Commission (NSC) on Thursday released the final list, confirming that Nigeria will compete in nine events—six on track and three in field disciplines—at the global showpiece scheduled for September 13–21.
Amusan, who made history as Nigeria’s first-ever world champion in athletics, will once again carry the nation’s hopes alongside long jump star Ese Brume, the first African to win two medals in the event at the World Championships, including silver in 2022.
Nigeria’s women’s team features seven athletes, including US-born discus thrower Obiageri Amaechi, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons in discus, and Oyesade Olatoye in hammer throw.
On the men’s side, rising sprint sensation Israel Okon, just 18, will make his senior World Championships debut after storming to a 10.04s finish in Yaba earlier this year to clinch the national 100m title. He will be joined by fellow teenage star Samuel Ogazi, who claimed three gold medals at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games and will compete in the 400m.
Veterans such as former national 100m champion Kanyinsola Ajayi and shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi also made the cut.
In a statement, the NSC charged the athletes to “bring glory to the nation” as they prepare to test their strength against the world’s best.
