Sushila Karki, Nepal’s former chief justice, is expected to be named interim prime minister following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli amid violent youth-led demonstrations.
Gatekeepers News reports that the protests, driven by anger over corruption, economic stagnation, and a now-lifted social media ban, left 51 people dead and more than 1,300 injured this week in clashes with police.
According to Reuters, a constitutional expert advising President Ramchandra Paudel and army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel confirmed that Karki is the favoured choice.
The source said, “Sushila Karki will be appointed interim prime minister. They (Gen Z) want her. This will happen today.”
Her appointment is expected to be confirmed after a meeting at Paudel’s residence today, September 12.
Oli stepped down on Tuesday, saying the move was necessary to take further steps towards a political solution and resolution of the problems.
The protest escalated into violence as protesters attacked homes of political leaders. In Kathmandu, Rabi Laxmi Chitrakar, wife of former prime minister Jhalanath Khanal, died after being trapped when protesters set her home ablaze.
Police spokesperson Binod Ghimire said the dead included 21 protesters, nine prisoners, three officers, and 18 others.
