Tobi Amusan Advances To 100m Hurdles Semi-Final At World Athletics Championships

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has advanced to the semi-final of the women’s 100m hurdles at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Gatekeepers News reports that Amusan on Sunday clocked 12.53 seconds to claim victory in her heat, finishing ahead of Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas and Italy’s Elena Carraro, who placed second and third, respectively.

The world record holder dominated the race despite registering the fifth-slowest reaction to the starting gun. Amusan currently sits ninth in the world ranking.

She has now been drawn in Heat 2 of the semi-final, where she will face the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser, ranked third globally in the women’s 100m hurdles.

According to the championship format, the top two athletes from each of the three semi-final heats will qualify for the final, along with two others with the fastest times across the board.

Meanwhile, Oyesade Olatoye fell short of reaching the final in the hammer throw after posting 68.82m on her third attempt, which improved on her opening throw of 66.78m. The effort placed her 10th in qualification Group A, ending her campaign.

With Olatoye’s exit, Amusan remains Nigeria’s sole female contender at the championships.
