Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has died at the age of 46.
Gatekeepers News reports that Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde, northwest England. Police said they do not suspect foul play.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said, “Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45 am (0545 GMT) today (Sunday) where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”
Tributes have poured in from across the boxing world. Britain’s former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury wrote on Instagram, “Rip to the legend Ricky Hatton may he rip. There will only ever be 1 Ricky Hatton. Can’t believe this so young.”
Former champion Amir Khan also praised him on X, describing Hatton as a mentor, warrior, and one of Britain’s greatest boxers. Khan added that Hatton’s story showed the importance of speaking openly about mental health struggles.
Hatton was a two-weight world champion, winning titles at light-welterweight and welterweight. Known for his aggressive fighting style, he became one of Britain’s most popular boxers, facing top names like Kostya Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao.
After retiring, Hatton openly discussed his struggles with mental health. In July, he had announced plans for a comeback fight against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai this December.
