Cinema legend Robert Redford has died at the age of 89, media outlets report. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Utah.

Gatekeepers News reports that Redford’s career spanned over six decades. He first became a household name opposite Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), followed by major roles in The Sting, All the President’s Men, Out of Africa, and others.

After rising to fame as an actor, he transitioned into directing and producing, winning the Academy Award for Best Director for Ordinary People (1980). He also co-founded the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival, which became a major platform for independent filmmaking.

Redford was also a lifelong environmentalist and activist, deeply invested in conserving the natural world around him and helping foster artistic expression and independent voices in cinema.

He is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars Redford, his daughters, and grandchildren.
