Rivers State House of Assembly has resolved to probe the handling of the state’s finances during the six-month tenure of Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator.
Gatekeepers News reports that at Thursday’s plenary, the first since the lifting of emergency rule, lawmakers also urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 appropriation bill for legislative consideration.
The assembly further requested that the Governor submit a list of commissioner-nominees for screening and confirmation.
Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu lifted the state of emergency on September 17, thereby restoring all democratic institutions in Rivers.
The session, presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, was held at the conference hall of the legislative quarters, as the main assembly building remains under reconstruction following its demolition months ago.
In his address, Amaewhule commended Tinubu for reinstating democratic structures in the state and pledged the assembly’s cooperation with Governor Fubara.
Tinubu had declared emergency rule on March 18 after prolonged political tensions between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The measure led to the suspension of Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Odu, and all members of the legislature for six months, with Ibas appointed to administer the state in their absence.
