Cholera outbreak in Bauchi State has killed 58 people and infected at least 258 others across 14 local government areas, according to official figures released by the state government.
Gatekeepers News reports that to curb the spread, the government has inaugurated a Cholera Steering Committee chaired by Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau, along with a Technical Working Group headed by Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sani Danbam.
Speaking during the inauguration, Jatau warned of the severe impact of the recurring outbreaks on the state’s health system and economy.
“The recurrent outbreaks continue to claim lives, disrupt livelihoods, and place enormous strain on our health system and socio-economic well-being. As of week 35, the state had recorded 258 new cholera cases and 58 deaths,” he said.
He tasked the committees with leading the state’s emergency response and long-term prevention strategy. “These committees are expected to serve as the central coordinating bodies to lead Bauchi State’s multi-sectoral response to cholera outbreaks and to drive long-term prevention strategies in alignment with the National Cholera Control Plan and the broader goals of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention,” Jatau added.
The committees include representatives from key ministries, security agencies, the Bauchi State House of Assembly, emergency management bodies, development partners, and civil society organisations.
