NSCDC Vows Protection For Mineral Mapping In High-Risk Zones

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has assured that it will provide security for mineral mapping operations in high-risk areas where researchers and technical experts face heightened threats.

Gatekeepers News reports that speaking on Friday during a visit to the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) headquarters in Abuja, Attah Onoja, commander of the NSCDC’s special mining marshals, said their mandate goes beyond on-ground protection to ensuring that mineral resources are harnessed legally and contribute meaningfully to national development.

He said, “This visit is about synergy. To be effective in safeguarding Nigeria’s mineral wealth, the mining marshals must work hand-in-hand with research institutions like the Raw Materials Council.”

“Together, we can guarantee that those exploiting our resources illegally are brought to justice and that the sector delivers the value it owes to the nation.”

Onoja highlighted that collaboration with RMRDC was vital in areas such as data sharing, technical expertise, and prosecution support.

He also conveyed a goodwill message from Ahmed Audi, the NSCDC commandant-general, who reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to protecting mineral mapping projects.

Nnanyelugo Ike-Muanso, director-general of RMRDC, praised the mining marshals for their dedication and pledged the council’s support through data access, joint training, mineral laboratory analysis, and technical assistance.

He said, “The council recognises the importance of security in adding value to raw materials. This partnership will ensure our scientific mandate aligns with realities in the field.”

Onoja had earlier warned in August that illegal mining poses a severe threat to Nigeria’s economy, environment, and national security.

Illegal mining has drained this country of revenue and devastated communities. Our mission is clear: to protect Nigeria’s mineral wealth for the benefit of all,” he stressed.
