Nigeria Secures Re-Election Into International Civil Aviation Council

Nigeria has been re-elected into Part II of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) council at the 42nd ICAO assembly which is currently taking place in Montreal, Canada.

Gatekeepers News reports that Mahmoud Ben-Tukur, Nigeria’s candidate and current representative to ICAO, won the election with 163 votes out of 185 eligible member states, defeating candidates from 11 other African nations.

His victory ensures Nigeria will continue to occupy its seat on the council, strengthening the country’s role in global aviation governance.

The re-election was achieved through Nigeria’s aviation diplomacy and strong alliances within ICAO, with the country re-elected alongside Egypt and South Africa.

Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, led an intensive campaign for Nigeria’s candidate and participated in the council voting sessions.

The minister described the outcome as a proud achievement for Nigeria and Africa, emphasizing that it reaffirms the nation’s commitment to international civil aviation while promoting safety, security, and sustainability in the sector.
