Olakunle Nafiu, Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has revealed that the collective services rendered by corps members in Lagos State contribute more than N14 billion each year to the state’s economy.
Gatekeepers News reports that Nafiu made this known during a courtesy visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos State Government House, Marina.
He explained that over 44,000 corps members are currently serving across the state in key sectors, including 333 medical doctors, 306 pharmacists, 274 nurses, and 7,188 teachers, among others, who help bridge manpower shortages in vital areas.
He described Lagos as the top destination for corps members, attributing this to the relative safety of the state which gives parents confidence in sending their children there for national service.
During the visit, Nafiu commended the Lagos State government for its consistent support, particularly the renovation of the temporary Iyana-Ipaja camp and the ongoing development of a 10,000-capacity permanent orientation camp.
He expressed optimism that the new site, once completed, would eliminate the need to send some corps members to neighboring states.
The DG appealed for continued operational backing from the state government, including the provision of an ambulance for the NYSC secretariat.
