Dame Sarah Mullally Becomes First Woman Appointed Archbishop Of Canterbury

For the first time in nearly five centuries, a woman has been appointed as the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Gatekeepers News reports that Dame Sarah Mullally, in her first address at Canterbury Cathedral, expressed gratitude to the women who paved the way before her and reflected on the challenges and hopes of the Church of England.

Speaking on safeguarding, Mullally admitted that addressing the misuse of power would be difficult but noted signs of cultural change.

She also stressed the Church’s responsibility to stand against antisemitism, condemning hatred in the wake of the deadly synagogue attack in Manchester.

King Charles and Prime Minister Keir Starmer both congratulated Mullally, with the King affirming her appointment as archbishop-designate.

Her formal confirmation is scheduled for January, followed by an enthronement ceremony.
