Rivers State Police Command has arrested a serving police corporal and a university student for alleged involvement in cultism at the University of Port Harcourt.
Gatekeepers News reports that Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson of the command, confirmed that the suspects identified as Onwukwe Godswill, attached to Elimgbu Division, and Ifeanyi Israel, a 200-level Biomedical Technology student were intercepted on September 26 by the university’s security unit during an operation aimed at preventing a clash between rival cult groups on campus.
Following the arrest, the Anti-Cultism Unit (ACU) of the police took charge of the case. A search revealed two locally made pistols, four live cartridges, two rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a small axe. Additional searches conducted at Godswill’s residence produced another pistol and two machetes.
Iringe-Koko said, “The suspects and exhibits are currently in police custody. An in-depth investigation has been launched to determine the full extent of the suspects’ involvement in cultism and other related activities.” She added that the command is pursuing possible connections and collaborators.
Olugbenga Adepoju, Rivers commissioner of police, emphasised that the command will not tolerate criminality, warning that those engaging in cultism or violence would face the law.
He urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
