Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Itedo Market in Lekki for persistent environmental violations and illegal roadside trading.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development in a post on X on Saturday.
He wrote, “Earlier today, Itedo Market in Lekki was shut down indefinitely following repeated environmental breaches and unauthorised street trading.
He noted that five offenders were arrested, while three Black Marias were deployed to the area to maintain order and deter further violations.
Wahab emphasised that Lagos would not condone disregard for environmental laws or unlawful trading on streets, stressing that the state remains committed to restoring order, ensuring public safety, and enforcing the rule of law.
The decision comes amid growing concerns about sanitation and safety across Lagos Island. Residents have complained about poor waste management, styrofoam litter, and open defecation despite the state’s ban on single-use plastics such as nylon bags, cups, bottles, and food packs.
Recall that the state government began full enforcement of its single-use plastics ban in July, warning that shops caught selling or storing prohibited materials would face closure and prosecution.
The policy is aimed at reducing pollution, preventing blocked drainage, and promoting sustainable alternatives.
