The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for urgent action to address the pressing global teacher shortage, marking World Teachers’ Day 2025.
Gatekeepers News reports that in aba statement made public Sunday, Tinubu described teachers as true heroes, shaping minds, nurturing dreams, and guiding generations.
She emphasised that the profession’s significance to national development cannot be overstated, noting that teachers play an invaluable role in nation-building and the future of humanity.
Drawing on her own background in education, Remi said, “As a lifelong teacher myself, I hold deep respect for the profession and those who dedicate their lives to it.
The first lady further affirmed that this year’s theme, “Focusing on the Global Teacher Shortage,” is a timely call to action:
“The shortage of teachers is a challenge we must confront with urgency, by empowering educators, investing in their growth, and inspiring more to join this noble profession.”
She urged governments, communities, and stakeholders to come together and create incentives, improved working conditions, and career support that would attract more people into teaching and retain existing teachers.
The First Lady also used the occasion to extend her gratitude to educators across Nigeria, paying tribute to their dedication during challenging times. “I salute you all on this special day,” she added.
Her message comes amid broader calls for educational reforms and protection of learning spaces in Nigeria. In September, Tinubu had similarly urged stronger measures to safeguard schools and ensure safe learning environments, arguing that education is the foundation of hope, and safeguarding it means securing our future.
