Chukwuma Soludo, Governor of Anambra State, has directed local authorities to immediately halt the collection of levies from petty traders across the state.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement issued by Christian Aburime, the Governor’s spokesperson, Soludo gave the order after visiting Eke Market in Awgbu, where he discovered that traders operating with less than ₦100,000 capital were still being taxed despite an existing government ban.

The Governor warned, Don’t collect from them anymore. We will arrest anybody who goes ahead to disregard this.”

He appreciated residents of Ekwulọbịa for their continued support, describing the gathering as a people’s movement. Soludo also revisited the vision of former Governor Jim Nwobodo, who had classified Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, and Ekwulọbịa as cities, noting that the latter had suffered neglect in developmental planning.

He said, “To become a real city, Ekwulọbịa requires serious planning”, proposing the creation of a special committee on urban development to drive progress.

Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to social welfare, the Governor highlighted ongoing free education, antenatal care, and delivery services for the less privileged.

Community leaders, including Joseph Okafor and Chibueze Offorbike, mayor of Aguata LGA, commended Soludo for his remarkable achievements in just three years, noting that Aguata has transitioned from a rural area to an urban community under his leadership.
