Reps Constitution Review Committee To Hold Meeting With Party Leaders Today

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review will today, 6 October, hold a consultative meeting with the leadership of all registered political parties.

Gatekeepers News reports that the strategic meeting is part of efforts to ensure inclusive participation in the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution.

In a statement on Sunday, Akin Rotimi, spokesperson of the House, described the gathering as a high-level consultation designed to strengthen the engagement of key stakeholders in shaping the amendment process. He noted that the committee aims to make the review reflect the voices and aspirations of Nigerians.

According to Rotimi, national chairmen, national secretaries, and national women leaders of political parties are expected to attend the session.

Discussions will focus on major reform areas such as special legislative seats for women, judicial and electoral reforms, independent candidacy, local government autonomy, state policing, and the protection of human rights.

He explained that the meeting would provide an avenue for party representatives to present their views, share ideas, and contribute to the formulation of credible and inclusive constitutional changes.

Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Committee on Constitution Review, emphasised that the dialogue offers political parties an opportunity to contribute their experience and institutional knowledge to the reform process.

Kalu stated, “Political parties remain the engine room of our democracy, and their active participation in this consultation is vital to achieving constitutional amendments that are inclusive, credible, and reflective of the collective aspirations of Nigerians.”

The committee also announced that a summary of the bills currently being considered in the ongoing constitution amendment exercise can be accessed on its official website, hccr.gov.ng.
