“It’s Baseless And Defamatory”— Monday Ubani Condemns Tonye Jaja’s Publication

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, has strongly condemned the “baseless and defamatory” publication written by Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja.

Gatekeepers News reports that Jaja had in a statement, titled “Open Letter to BOSAN: BOSAN Should Avoid the Appearance of Selective Justice” and dated October 7, 2025, accused Ubani of bringing international embarrassment to Nigeria.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ubani stated that the allegations were nothing but “pedestrian gibberish from a frustrated and delusional character.”

He said the publication was “replete with lies, innuendos, and malicious distortions,” stressing that there was no judicial record linking him to any contempt proceedings or sanctions by any Nigerian court.

He clarified, “At no time have I ever been cited for contempt by Hon. Justice Binta Nyako or by any court in Nigeria”, adding that the claims were “outright fabrications without a single judicial record to support them.”

Ubani further emphasised that the Certified True Copy of the judgment in question is publicly available both online and offline, containing no such finding or reference against him.

According to him, his public engagements have always adhered to the Rules of Professional Conduct and the highest standards of decorum expected of members of the Inner Bar.

Describing Dr. Jaja as “unknown to the hierarchy of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), or any recognised platform of the legal profession,” Ubani questioned his credibility and professional standing.

He added, “His self-appointed title as ‘leader of 1,000 legislative lawyers’ is a pure invention of fantasy,” accusing Jaja of having a “history of reckless publications, unfounded allegations, and pseudo-intellectual rants.”

The SAN also dismissed another claim linking him to one Dr. Sandra Duru (a.k.a. Prof. Mgbeke) as a principal witness, calling it “another baseless fabrication.”

He explained that all official legal engagements of the Senate were conducted through proper institutional procedures that were transparent and professionally guided.

Ubani said that Jaja’s motives were malicious and envy-driven rather than in defense of BOSAN’s integrity. He said, “It is apparent that Dr. Jaja’s intention was never to ‘protect the image of BOSAN’ but rather to malign Senior Advocates whose reputations intimidate his mediocrity.”

The senior advocate announced that his legal team had been instructed to petition the Inspector-General of Police to investigate Dr. Jaja for cyberstalking and criminal defamation under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015, and to institute a civil action for libel and injurious falsehood.

Reaffirming his unblemished record, Ubani noted, “For over three decades at the Bar, my record remains untainted. I have served this profession and our nation honourably.”

He highlighted his various leadership roles, including former Second Vice President of the NBA, past Chairman of the NBA Ikeja Branch, past Chairman of SPIDEL, current Chairman of the NBA Committee on Electoral Reform, and Special Adviser (Legal and Constitutional Matters) to the President of the Senate.

Ubani maintained that he had “never faced any disciplinary issue before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee or BOSAN,” and urged the public to disregard Jaja’s publication, describing its author as a man “notorious for extortionate behaviour” and “currently under police investigation for domestic issues.”

He further said, “The publication is the product of malice, envy, and intellectual bankruptcy”, he declared, adding that his commitment to the rule of law, professional ethics, and the dignity of the legal profession remains steadfast and unshakeable.
